About your area

Islington was originally named by the Saxons Giseldone (1005), then Gislandune (1062). The name means 'Gīsla's hill' from the Old English personal name Gīsla and dun 'hill', 'down'. The name then later mutated to Isledon, which remained in use well into the 17th century when the modern form arose. In medieval times, Islington was just one of many small manors hereabouts, along with Bernersbury, Neweton Berewe or Hey-bury and Canonesbury (Barnsbury, Highbury and Canonbury - names first recorded in the 13th and 14th centuries).

Barnsbury -

The name is a corruption of villa de Iseldon Berners (1274), being so called after the Berners family, who gained ownership of the lands after the Norman Conquest and were powerful medieval manorial lords, owning a large part of Islington.The area of Barnsbury was predominantly rural until the early nineteenth century.

Canonbury - In 1253 land in the area was granted to the Canons of St Bartholomew’s Priory, Smithfield and became known as Canonbury. The area continued predominantly as open land until it was developed as a suburb in the early 19th century
